BJC | Fitness at BJC has a new name — and a new location.
When the fitness center formerly known as the BJC WellAware Center recently moved two blocks east of its longtime location, it also took on a new name that better reflects its mission: Move by BJC.
Located at 4220 Duncan Ave. in the Cortex district, with 17,600 square feet, Move by BJC boasts nearly twice as much space as the former location, and 95 percent of the center’s equipment is brand new. Other highlights include:
“Plans for a new facility had been discussed for nearly 10 years,” says Move by BJC manager Aaron Gutjahr. “While WellAware 1.0 was a great facility, we had begun to outgrow the space, we were in dire need of expanded locker rooms, and the group exercise program was limited by a lack of space.
“Our new facility allowed for expansion and provides a much-needed improvement in both space and program development,” Gutjahr says. “So far, we’ve gotten nothing but excellent feedback from clients about the layout, equipment choices and overall modern finishes of the facility. It is truly a transformation.”
The facility’s new name reflects that transformation, as well as the center’s mission.
“Move — it’s what people go there to do,” says Barnes-Jewish Hospital marketing manager Dale Peluso, who worked on the branding of the new facility. “And the professionals at the facility can help them move better, faster, stronger.”
Attaching “by BJC” to the name emphasizes BJC’s endorsement of the facility and its team of professionals, Peluso says.
“All of the staff are educated and degreed, many of them exercise physiologists and movement scientists, and many with master’s degrees,” he says. “They are professionals, just like the many other medical professionals across BJC.”
Move by BJC will hold a grand opening celebration from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Nov. 29. See the full grand opening schedule of events here.

Feedback about the center has been excellent
Barnes-Jewish Hospital patient transport team member Antonio Ward, 38, joined the former BJC WellAware Center in January 2012. During his first year as a member, he lost 75 pounds by exercising consistently and changing his eating habits.
He has maintained his good habits, continuing to work out at the center three to four days a week, including both cardio and weights, before heading to his shift at BJH. He says the new space at Move by BJC is perfect.
“I like it,” Ward says. “Some people like the sights and sounds of a more ‘flashy’ gym, but this is good for me. It feels more personal — and it has everything I need.”
Ward also likes the center’s natural light and outdoor views, thanks to large windows throughout the facility. And he likes its location near the Cortex MetroLink stop, saying, “It works perfectly with my routine.”
Here’s what a few other members — and some staff — think about the new fitness center:
“It’s very clean and brand new. Because it’s so much bigger, there’s plenty of room — it’s not crammed — and you have everything you could possibly need to do your workout. The locker rooms are really great — and the employee discount is great, too. “
— Elliott Estrada,Barnes-Jewish Hospital 11800
“I love it! I love the new equipment and the natural light. The atmosphere is totally different from the old facility. We have a great group of people, and the community as a whole is amazing.”
— Sarah Dalton, Move by BJC exercise physiologist
“I love it. It’s so nice and clean. It’s a good environment. I can work out and feel comfortable, not self-conscious. It’s nearby, and I have everything I need — I don’t have to worry about anything. “
— Jamie Varughese, Barnes-Jewish Hospital 13100
“I love the space. I love the atmosphere — and people seem to enjoy the open, expanded area and the natural light.”
— Bake McBride, Move by BJC exercise specialist

Why is the gym membership for BJC Employees $32 a month? That is expensive!

How exciting! Love the new name - Move by BJC. Can't wait to see this excellent team in their new space. Congratulations Aaron and Team Move!

This is very exciting news! The gym appears to offer lots of great features, but the monthly cost is too high! BJC employees can already take advantage of deep discounts with other local gyms like Club Fitness for half the monthly cost. Also, for $32 a month, employees could pay a few extra dollars and have access to a YMCA with a pool. Leadership may want to reconsider the cost for BJC employees.

Anybody know if they have platforms and barbells with bumper plates? Sincerely, an Olympic Lifter who is always looking for new spaces to workout in.

You're in luck! Here's the reply from Move manager Aaron Gutjahr: We do have Olympic bars with bumper plates, and we should be installing our platforms in the next 2 weeks, if they arrive on time. So by December 15th, we should be fully ready for an Olympic lifter.

Are there any plans for a sauna in the future?
11/30/2018 10:48 AM
Sorry, there are no plans for a sauna (or pool) at the new center. But be sure to stop by and check out the other great amenities there!

Yes, I have no clue why the membership is $32. I do not think leadership thought about it much. You have other gyms with $10-20 membership fee a month. Plus, you can pay $40 a month with Gold's Gym and have pools and Sauna. The gym looks great and the features might be nice but the membership is too high!

Any plans for BJC employees in St. Charles county area to have access for us?
