BJC BEHAVIORAL HEALTH | In recognition of her ongoing and significant efforts in supporting the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program throughout the Greater St. Louis area, Brittney Haymer, BJC Behavioral Health community mental health liaison (CMHL), was presented with the 2017 CIT Outstanding Mental Health Professional of the Year award.
Haymer, part of the CMHL team since 2015, was awarded the honor by the CIT Coordinating Council of St. Louis County. The CIT delivers crisis intervention services to people with mental illness in the St. Louis area. As a CMHL, Haymer’s role is to assist law enforcement and the courts in addressing the behavioral health issues of those who come to the attention of the justice system.
“Brittney does a tremendous amount of work, not only for the CIT program, but for the community of St. Louis as well,” says St. Louis County Police Officer Chris Koestner. “She is always there to support us, she’s passionate about her work, and she’s a very good friend of mine.”
The award was presented at the 12th annual CIT Officers Recognition Dinner, Nov. 15.
Liaisons provide knowledge, referrals
The Community Mental Health Liaison (CMHL) program was created in July 2013 through the Strengthening Missouri Mental Health initiative. BJC Behavioral Health began recruiting for CMHLs and the program began Nov. 1, 2013.
CMHLs serve as consultants and subject matter experts on mental illness for law enforcement officers. They can go immediately where needed or, more often, follow up after a situation. The goal is to help a person get necessary mental health referrals and avoid entering the criminal justice system. From January to October 2017, BJC Behavioral Health CMHLs had 3,232 contacts with law enforcement and made 688 referrals.
BJC Behavioral Health’s CMHLs include Christine Beavin, St. Louis City, Maplewood and Richmond Heights; Brittney Haymer and Veronica West, St. Louis County, plus 60 municipalities in the St. Louis area; and Jennifer Beard, who covers St. Francois, Iron and Washington counties.
