The new BJC/WUSM online directory — eBook — launched today (Dec. 19).
The eBook — which has undergone a complete transformation — now has an updated, modern look, contains more up-to-date information and is easier to use than ever before.
Look for the new eBook at the top of the BJCnet home page, under eBook, or at ebook.carenet.org.
Searching is easy
Both simple searches and advanced searches are more user-friendly with the new directory. For example, employees now can type in a name — or even just part of a name — and get a list of all possible results.
In addition to the simple search, which provides a quick way to find individuals’ phone numbers and email addresses, the advanced search allows employees to search by specific fields, including first or last name, title, specialty, facility or department. The results display all individuals, departments and facilities that match the search criteria.
Searching for a person: In addition to basic contact information, other details can be displayed for team members, including:
Searching for a department: Department search results include department contact information, as well as a list of all department staff with links to their individual information.
Searching for a facility: Facility search results include all departments within the facility and the contact information for those departments.
Even more tools now available
Whether employees are searching the eBook on their computer or their phone, the new directory contains links to email addresses, so employees can simply click the link within eBook to open a new email.
Team members can also download a vCard — the digital equivalent of a business card with all of an individual’s information — for employees within the eBook. This may then be imported into Outlook so that it will sync to your corporate cell phone.
Is your information complete?
Because the information contained in the eBook updates automatically from BJC and WUSM human resources and credentialing systems, it’s much more current than the previous directory. However, not all contact information is currently available for all employees.
It’s important that all employees search for themselves, review their information for accuracy and completeness, and make any necessary updates.
Here’s how to update your information in BJC's HR system (PeopleSoft):
Work phone numbers (work phone and work mobile phone) are loaded to eBook. Personal phone numbers are not loaded to eBook.
Managers whose list of direct reports isn’t up to date should work with their human resources business partner to update the information in PeopleSoft, which will then update in eBook within 24-48 hours. If the individual listed as your support staff is not correct, contact the Telecommunications Facilities Corp. (TFC) customer support center at 314-362-2888, option 3.
If department information — such as the main department telephone number — is missing or inaccurate, the department manager should contact the TFC customer support center at 314-362-2888, option 3.

This is much better, although there's a major user experience defect.
When entering someone's name, the field should auto-populate.
Here's why: If I seek to find a name and misspell someone's last name by just one letter, the tool will not provide information needed.
Can someone please advise if this improvement opportunity will be addressed? Thank you.

We did consider this functionality. However, with more than 50,000 entries (BJC and WUSM) and multiple name spellings, users’ preferred names, hyphenated names, email addresses, etc., we found that we could not generate a consistent user experience. We suggest that you choose the advanced search tab and try the “Sounds Like” search. If users hit “enter” with a partial name in the search field(s), then that will be used for the search and can help find alternate spellings such as Smyth vs. Smith.
We are continuing to enhance the capabilities as time goes on, but we don’t have specific plans for the type-ahead feature requested.

Also, I suggest changing the name of this from "ebook" to terminology that is more understandable. Most organizations call it a "people directory"
I also suggest placing it as a second search field, labeled as "people directory," under the main search box. Otherwise people will overlook it because there are too many options -- many far less used -- that are receiving equal billing.

So....a major user experience defect has been found, what is the response? I heard a major goal for BJC is to become more "customer centric," meaning we also treat our employees like customers. Is this defect being addressed?

The Wash U directory auto-populates with possible names under the search bar as one types. When will BJC's search auto-populate in this manner?

It would be very helpful if employee mailstops were included in the address!

I like the e-book to contact people. At times employees move and change numbers. At least them will help to stay in contact.

One suggestion: add the employee's mailstop along with their address. I never know where to find a list of mailstops.
