BJC | Non-profit hospitals and health care organizations provide a wide range of community benefit services including free medical services, education of health professionals, support of medical research and health outreach programs in the communities they serve.

To ensure that hospital community health programs meet the needs of their particular community, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 requires that each 501(c)3 hospital facility:

  • conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) — an assessment of the significant health needs of the community — every three years
  • adopt an implementation strategy plan to meet the community health needs identified in the CHNA
  • make the CHNA and implementation plan widely available to the public
