BJC | This week, across our nation and across BJC HealthCare, we have the opportunity to recognize, celebrate and thank U.S. military veterans in honor of Veterans Day.
It’s remarkable how many veterans who served our country, along with current members of the National Guard and Reserves, are now serving our patients and communities as BJC team members. At the same time, it’s not at all surprising knowing how much it means to veterans to serve others.
Our BJC Veterans Connection group — led by Mike Kelly, Missouri Baptist Medical Center vice president of operations and U.S. Army veteran, and Troy Compardo, BJC HealthCare director of supply chain operations, U.S. Army veteran and current member of the Air National Guard — provides BJC veterans an opportunity to connect with other veterans from across all of our hospitals and service organizations. The Connection group helps to build a veterans community, assist with recruitment events and get involved in community outreach.
As an example, Cathy Wagner, Christian Hospital OR assistant nurse manager and Navy veteran, coordinated BJC’s partnership with the American Red Cross’ “Women Warriors baby shower” to show support for the sacrifices women make to serve our country, whether that’s been in active service or as the spouse of an active service member. The Veterans Connection members across BJC teamed up to help to support this event. Altogether, team members contributed nearly 800 items, including bibs, baby clothes, packages of diapers and more. The Veterans Connection partnered with BJC supply chain to package and deliver all of the donations to the Red Cross.
Most recently, in late October, the group continued its now-annual volunteer event at Missouri Veterans Endeavor (MOVE-STL). Dozens of BJC team members helped with fall cleaning at the organization’s housing complex for homeless and at-risk veterans and their families.
The brave men and women who serve our country and defend our freedom are true heroes. It’s our honor to celebrate our U.S. military veterans working across BJC at our annual Red, White and Thank You celebrations.
Thank you to all who have served, and those who continue to serve, our country.
